11 Little Things That Make Me Happy

I was on my way to drop off Olivia at daycare and the DJs on the radio were talking about this study done about 11 simple things that make us happy. Some of the items on the list were sleeping in and receiving flowers. I thought about some of the items on the list and decided to come up with my own. A fun little experiment and good way to start my birthday weekend. Also, feel free to play along in the comments!

If you’re interested in the original study, here’s the link. Looks like it was conducted in Britain in 2014.

11 Little Things That Make Me Happy

Here’s my list, in some sort of order from 11 to 1, but it was hard to sort some of them…

  • No line at the grocery store

Grocery shopping can be pretty hectic sometimes and maneuvering through a busy store is not how you want to spend your Saturday afternoon. Yet, there’s something very satisfying about getting all your groceries, heading to the checkout lanes and finding an open cashier. I feel much more accomplished when this happens. It almost makes the experience enjoyable.

  • Feeling the sun on your skin

I love sunny days and feeling the sun’s rays on your skin has to be one of the most relaxing things in the world.

  • A good glass of wine at the end of the day

This just means that I have accomplished everything I wanted to get done on my to-do list and I can just relax for a few minutes. Finishing the day with a clear head and a glass of wine in my hand makes me quite happy.

  • Stepping into the ocean

You know the feeling, walking to the shore and stepping in the wet sand just where the water dances right above your feet. Bliss.

11 Happy Things

  • A relaxing walk

Going out on a walk is a for sure way to put me in a good mood. It can be anywhere, just around the neighborhood, a park or some sort of trail. Getting outside, breathing some fresh air and moving makes everything better.

  • A good hug

This might seem simple, but it works wonders as a mood booster, plus it’s very comforting. I come from the tradition of greeting everybody with a kiss and sometimes even a good hug. I definitely miss hugs. Being affectionate runs in my family and we have some great huggers. No matter what’s going on in the day, a strong embrace will put a smile on my face.

  • Dog snuggles

Boy, I miss Boone. He was the best cuddler ever. Pets are great at keeping you happy, even if they’re a lot of work sometimes. Coming home from work and seeing that silly face and wagging tail ready for you to pet them is a great feeling. And I loved laying down on the couch with him keeping me warm. Yep, dog snuggles are the best!

  • Picking up family at airport

The anticipation of family visits is exciting enough, but it truly makes me happy when it’s time to pick them up at the airport and you see them waiting for you curbside. It’s like yey! they’re here! they’re safe! let’s hug! let’s hang out! let’s enjoy life!

11 Things Happy

  • Perfect bite of dessert

Ok, this one might be a little unorthodox, but caving in to a craving would make anyone happy. That one bite of dessert, or a great meal works too, is so satisfying that it makes my soul happy.

  • Goodnight kiss before bed

By nature, I’m a worrier. I go to bed with a list of things I need to get done or didn’t do, sometimes laying awake for a long time before being able to fall asleep. A goodnight kiss from Ryan is sometimes all I need to calm my head and finally put all those thoughts to rest. Just this simple thing gives me peace.

  • Olivia’s laughs, smiles and rants

Duh! I bet you could see this one coming from a mile away. No matter how stressful my day has been, even is it was caused by her, a small smile from that little girl will make me the happiest person on Earth. It’s quite amusing to hear her scream and rant and there hasn’t been a single day that she hasn’t been able to fill my heart with love and happiness. Sometimes the best conversations of the day are the back and forth screaming sessions with her.
